APPS: Fanuc CNC file Download

I have some CNC knowledge, but I am unclear about something.  How does one load part programs and/or macros into a typical CNC, like Fanuc or Siemens?  I know about MDI at the operator terminal.

What I do not know is how does the CNC use the RS-232 port.  Is it always listening and accepting commands?  Does it look for a program number, O0001 for example, and store it in non-volatile memory?  Or is special software required? (I don't think so).  Do you have to be in a certain mode to load programs?

I would be grateful if someone could describe the process.

Thanks,

Bill
